For thousands of years, a rift in the fabric of reality has existed under London England. Very few people knew of its existence, as it was kept secret by the various groups that ruled over the area throughout the ages. This rift was the source of all dragons and other such mystical creatures in the world, as they sometimes escaped through the rift.
During the 15th Century, the leaders in the city of London decided to secede from the rest of England. Declaring themselves a sovereign state, they renamed themselves Londinium.
In a effort to recruit mystical beings they could use to wage war against their allies and defend their newly formed rebel state, the political leaders of Londinium instructed the monks that had kept the rift closed for years to attempt to open it just a little.
When the monks attempted to open a small portal in the rift, the rift instead tore wide open and everything within a 2-mile radius was instantly destroyed. In its place was left an area of absolute darkness and mystical chaos that exists even to this day.
Out of this tear in reality poured out all kinds of mystical creatures. Some of these creatures and races were sentient, while others were not. Some were peaceful and were able to adapt to human society, while others brought only destruction.
In time, a barrier was constructed that sealed this 2-mile area into what is now known as the Rift Dome. Opening the rift has been both a blessing and a curse to Londinium and the world at large. On the one hand, it allowed Londinium to become the world's only superpower and accelerated the technological and mystical progress of the world. On the other hand, it unleashed creatures of unspeakable destruction and evil.
Even though the rift was eventually contained, the damage to reality spread like cracks in glass and smaller tears do appear from time to time all over the world. Areas prone to these tears have been largely abandoned and are known as "outlands" because nobody dares go near them.
Life for those who came through the rift has not always been too good either. Because of their differences in comparison to the humans that had always been the dominate race a good amount of racism occurs against "rifters" as they are often called.
This racism was fueled partially by the Londinium government's hope to control what they saw as powerful beings capable of challenging their grip on power. Almost every race that has sprung forth from the rift has faced some sort of persecution from the government ranging from mild harassment to extermination.
While over time attitude against these races has improved greatly a good amount of racism still exists against certain races and some "anti-rifter" laws yet remain on the books.
A great amount of time has passed and the effect the opening of the rift has had on Londinium is apparent. People now communicate over great distances with small hovering stones referred to as "speak stones." For a nominal fee, one can be instantly transported over vast distances through the "public teleportation system." Many more wonders are now a part of daily life in Londinium.
Welcome to the Great Empire of Londinium! We hope you enjoy your stay.

At this time the information in the project wasn't organized well because its still under development. At the point where we have a stable system I will see about reorganizing everything in a nice table of contents and such.
